5 Newest Landscaping Trends for 2020

Landscapers should expect to see the following five trends arise this year.

Everyone is talking about the newest landscaping trends for 2020. The National Association of Landscape Professionals has released their expert prediction on the top five design elements likely to appear in landscapes this year. Although 2019 predictions got some ideas right, the NALP has spotted five more specific expectations for 2020 backyards.

Ornamental Hardscaping

What 2019 got right in their predictions was the idea of bringing the indoors out. While homeowners have sought ways of bringing outdoor elements inside the home, they are now likewise making the outdoors as homey as possible. Common design elements seen indoors, like geometric or wavy patterns, will show up on the hardscapes outdoors. Natural stone walkways, understandably, will still be popular.

Transitional, Contemporary Features

Homeowners are also looking to see how they can install a backyard design that can adjust to a broader range of temperatures. Fountains and outdoor kitchens, for example, need to be able to withstand both the hot summer sun and the freeze of winter. Plants also need to be suitable for their environment, which native plants often are. Meanwhile, contemporary style, which includes neutral grays and simple lines are coming outdoors as well.

Lots of Blue

Deeply-saturated blues have already made an appearance in the market through flowerpots and other decorative items, but the NALP predicts that this year will be particularly rich in blues. Blue outdoor features and blue plants like hydrangeas, hyacinths, and delphiniums will be more in-demand, as well as blue paint for interior walls.

Gardens Galore

Gardens are not just for flowers these days. Similar to the 2019 prediction that landscape plants will have multiple functions, this NALP prediction says that people will be more interested in gardening edibles in various ways, from containers to vertical structures. Besides this trend, you can take your backyard dreams to the max and go for it. This is the year to embrace individual tastes and lifestyles.

Top-notch Irrigation

Smart technology in 2020 includes a smarter irrigation system. You no longer will have to control your irrigation manually. Instead, you can control it remotely through your smartphone and water your plants with just the right dosage.
