Avoid These Landscaping Mistakes

Avoid These Landscaping Mistakes
Achieve a fantastic garden by avoiding these landscaping mistakes.

Spring is springing once again in Maryland, and with it come our ideas for how to improve and rejuvenate the garden. Landscaping plays a significant role in our properties, perhaps more than we realize. Having your own land on which to walk, relax, and play aids in mental and physical health. When it looks its best, it can make us feel better and potential homebuyers feel better too. For all the above reasons, you’ll definitely want to avoid these landscaping mistakes described below.

Not Looking at the Big Picture

In any design, one must always look at the big picture first. You might dream of putting a gurgling fountain in your backyard, but how will it fit into the whole design? Look at the measurements of your yard, the shape of the land, and the functionality of how your wish-list items might fit together within that space.

Forgetting About Trees

After mapping out the fundamentals of your yard, consider where trees and shrubs will go. These are the anchor pieces of your landscape. You can always transfer your deck, patio, hardscaping, or plants, but it is much harder to remove a tree.

Planting Too Close to Structures

Planting trees, shrubs, or other plants close to the deck, patio, walkway, or house can be disastrous. Hardy plants’ roots can damage concrete foundations, upheave walkways and patios, and damage underground pipes. Planting too close to swimming pools can also be highly problematic. Be sure to keep all trees and gnarly-rooted plants a safe distance from all structural components.

Not Studying Plants Thoroughly

Choosing plants can be more of a science than an art at times. One common mistake people make is not checking how tall and wide a particular species will grow. Other mistakes include not checking if the species is perennial or annual, not knowing how aggressive the plant is, and not planting species suitable to your climate zone. Maryland is primarily zone 7.
