The backyard is the place where families and friends can enjoy life outdoors on their own property. To wrap it all up, though, every homeowner needs a fence, and wood is the most popular material for the purpose. With all the styles of wood fences, however, the decision can be difficult. Here is a brief rundown of the most well-known styles.
A picket fence is a classic and provides adequate security measures, keeping intruders out and kids and pets within bounds. It consists of fence posts, horizontal posts, and the pickets. They can come in varying heights and can also be scalloped, straight, or arched. The pickets themselves can come in different designs.
A privacy fence, as the name implies, blocks one’s view into and out of the property. It can also act as a sound and wind barrier. Vertical board and board-on-board are the typical designs within this category. A privacy fence is ideal for houses on busy streets or close neighborhoods.
A split-rail fence consists of nothing more than fence posts and two or three horizontal rows of rails connecting them. They do not give much security or privacy at all, but they do help mark the property line to let people know where private property begins. They work well in suburban and rural landscapes.
A paddock fence has 3-5 horizontal posts connecting the fence posts. They are a more substantial version of a split-rail fence. For added protection from animals or people passing through the posts, one can add a wire mesh over the frame.
An estate fence is similar to the paddock fence, except that its topmost boards form an X-shape between each fence post. This adds security against intruders, especially with the wire mesh included.
