Bring birds into your backyard through beautiful landscaping!
Whether it is cold or warm in spring, birds of all kinds flock back to Maryland to build their nests and spend the summer. Birds are wonderful creatures, with many colors, beautiful songs, and of great interest to watch for children and adults alike. How can you create a bird-friendly backyard? Once you set up your garden, you can tend your garden, sit back, and watch the feathered folk come!
Curate a Varied Landscape
The first step is to have a garden that forms a beautiful and varied landscape. You will have your balanced assortment of trees, shrubs, perennials, etc. You get bonus points if those plants are all native species, which are easier to care for since they thrive in their native soil. A beautiful landscape will naturally attract birds to the nectar, seeds, berries, bugs, etc.
Leave Untamed Parts Untamed
If you have parts of your yard that you have not developed, however, it is best to leave it alone, even if it is a small patch. Birds will love having a place to forage and roost that is akin to their natural habitat.
Do Not Deadhead
Typical gardening advice to keep your landscape looking beautiful all the time would include deadheading flowers after they have wilted. However, if you want to attract birds to your garden, keep those wilted flowers around. They may contain seeds that are helpful nutrients to birds.
Avoid Pesticides
Insects are a major food source for many birds, so the healthier your insect ecosystem is, the more birds will thrive in your backyard. Avoid using pesticides in your yard; if insects bother you on your patio or deck, there are tactics to keep them in the yard and not on you.
Add a Water Feature
A bird bath or a small, shallow pond allows birds to take a drink and wash. Some birds, like robins, love taking baths! Keep the birdbath in the open, separate from outdoor living spaces, and change the water every few days to keep it fresh.
Add a Bird Feeder
A bird feeder is an excellent way to attract various birds to your backyard. In the summer, it serves as extra nutrients, and in the winter, it can be a much-needed meal.
Add Bird Houses
Bird houses let your local wild birds find places to build their nest that are not your awning, outdoor electric outlet, or another unwanted place. They also make great yard decorations!
