How to Maintain Your Driveway

Asphalt drive

Are you tired of having to repave your driveway so often? With these tips, you will save money and maintain your driveway so you won’t have to repave any time soon.

Driveways are the most used area on your property, and most people don’t recognize it until its cracked. If the problem isn’t taken care of, you run the risk of damaging your car and anyone else’s car that will visit your home. By keeping up with your driveway not only will extend the life of it, but it can look good for years to come. In this post, we will go over a few maintenance tips that will maintain your driveway for years to come.

Prevent and Fill Cracks

The cracks that form on your driveway is typically caused by water penetrating those cracks, freezing than cracking the asphalt. Also, tree and shrub roots can grow underneath the asphalt and make its way through it. To prevent this, you should remove any trees and other roots that are close to your driveway. Furthermore, if holes or cracks start to form patch those spots as soon as possible. Use a chisel to remove loose debris from the crack before using the sealant you decide to use. When dry seal the driveway, so it’s smooth and level to make sure people won’t trip when they visit your home.

Don’t Use Salt

Everyone is accustomed to using salt during the winter months to try and melt away the ice that may be on the ground. Although, unknown to some people, cement salt and chemical deicers can accelerate cracks from forming on your driveway. It’s recommended that instead of salting to either use a snowblower or shovel to remove the snow. There are several natural alternatives to salt such as sand, coffee grounds, or kitty litter that will help make the icy driveway a little less slippery.

Clean Your Driveway

Over a calendar year, your driveway will be covered in motor oil, radiator fluid, and other fluids used to help run your car. These fluids can soften the asphalt and easily penetrate your driveway. To clean fresher motor fluids use non-clumping kitty litter to absorb any fresh oil. Then use grease-cutting dish soap and warm water to wash it away. For older stains, your going to have to scrub the stain using a regular scrub brush and any soap that has grease stain fighting capabilities.
