Low-Maintenance Front Yard Tips

Low-Maintenance Front Yard Tips
For a simpler front yard landscape, consider these low-maintenance front yard tips!

The front yard, let alone the entire property, would be easier to care for if it was low-maintenance. While there are several ways to make your job easier, one must remember the words of one wise person who said, “Without a gardener, there’s no garden.” Below, you’ll find several top tips for creating and caring for a low-maintenance front yard.

Use Native Plants

Native plants make everything about landscaping easier. Native plants are already bred to thrive in the environment and do not need as much attention concerning plant disease, fertilizing, etc. Maryland has thousands of native species that can help you create a beautiful, colorful, low-maintenance front yard.

Plant According to Conditions

Maryland plants and other species fall into various categories, including sun exposure, soil type, plant species, and much more. Choose plants that fit your front yard’s conditions. Maryland soil is typically either sandy, loamy, clay, or rocky. Be sure to choose sun-loving plants for yards with full sun and shade plants for shade areas.

Use Mulch

Mulch is a natural weed killer and plant fertilizer. While you can buy mulch from the local depot, you can also create your own mulch with compost, grass clippings, and mulched autumn leaves. Mulch and compost will also protect your plants during the cold months.

Weed Strategically

Weeding is a necessary chore, but some might consider it therapeutic. In either case, you can make weeding easier by waiting to do it after a good rain, which loosens the soil. Use effective weeding tools and a pre-emergent weed killer to stop them from even sprouting.

Mow Less Frequently

Mowing your lawn is a summer activity, and in the summer, you don’t have to mow your lawn short. In fact, it might be healthier to let it grow to 3 or 4 inches to preserve moisture and prevent lawn disease. However, one should only remove a third of the blade at most to prevent a shock to the grass. This is called the “One-Third Rule.”

Irrigate Wisely

Plants often need more than rainfall to stay hydrated. Michael Bryan Landscapes can design and implement an irrigation and drainage system in your front yard that will save you both time, energy, and costs! With an automated system that is designed for minimal to no water waste, you can even afford to go on vacation without worrying about the plants.

Trade Grass for Gardens

Lawns take work, and in some instances, gardens take less work. Create a rain garden, a butterfly garden, or any type of garden you wish to create a low-maintenance front yard with privacy and beauty.
