Popular Plants for Garden Ponds

Garden pond plants are many; here are a few popular options for Maryland ponds.

Beautifully-designed and kept garden ponds are a sight to behold; everyone loves a water feature where one least expects one. If you are planning a garden pond for your backyard or commercial landscape, there are many plants you may want to have in your pond. Some pond plant species are emergent (above water,) some are floating, and some are submerged. Below is a sampling of popular plants for garden ponds in each category.

Blue Flag Iris

Blue flag iris is one of the most popular plants for garden ponds in the Iris family. Blue flag iris is smaller than the garden German Bearded Iris, but still reaches about 20-30 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide. It prefers full sun but can also do well in part shade. This dazzlingly bluish-purple iris with narrow leaves looks right at home at the edge of a Maryland garden pond.

Cardinal Flower

As the name implies, the cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) has bright red flowers. In the winter, they appear as rosettes on the ground, but in spring through fall they grow to be 2-4 feet tall. Like the blue flag iris, the cardinal flower makes an excellent garden pond border plant. The hummingbirds and butterflies will love it!

Water Lilies

What pond doesn’t have water lilies? There are so many water lily species to select, one cannot limit oneself to just one option! Any water lily species does well in a Maryland garden, and one can choose between many different colors, some plants having a range of colors in just one flower. Some even have a lovely fragrance.

Water Celery

Water celery is a type of submerged water plant that produces green leaves with white and pink edges. Submergent plants provide valuable cover and shade for animals living underwater. It produces little white flowers in the summer.

Water Weed

The common water weed is a native plant of the Chesapeake Bay and is a grass-like, underwater plant. Along each stem or branch, whorls of curved or straight leaves grow. This fresh water weed is a source of nutrition for ducks.
